Clawing my way to a busy month

Last week 28 or more photographers lost their jobs. The Chicago Sun-Times decided they didn't need any of their trained professionals, including a Pulitzer Prize winner , who spend their life training, honing, polishing and maintaining their visual and technical skills. There's sort of a trend of attitude developing in some circles about what it takes to to make a photograph rather than taking a picture , and dismissing the work, skill and talent of an entire spectrum of professionals I only bring this up because, it is relevant, sort of, to the blog I was planning to share some of my recent work, while talking about the creative problem-solving that went into some of my new favorite images. Final image, with the help of four lights, two yard workers, a dump truck and a claw. Gratefully, things have been very, very busy with one of my regular clients, creating com...

The Human Paint Brush

In creative fields, the creation is usually as satisfying as the final artwork. For sculptor, painter, artist of many mediums, Jeff Zischke, the process is not only part of the payback of creating art, it has become a performance. It has become the art itself. During the monthly get together of Creative Connect, in Phoenix, April 14, hosted in Jeff's studio in Scottsdale, he unveiled his latest creative process, creating abstract paintings with a human paintbrush. He suspended his willing subject from a mechanism that allowed him to dip her volumous hair into a pot of watered-down ink, and then move her hair over the paper to create six or seven abstract black paintings to the delight of the 80 or so creatives in attendence. Creation as art.....

Creativity and Raising Arizona Kids

"Do you want us to climb the tree?" Mom asks. In the last couple months, I've been thrilled to create images for a new client, Raising Arizona Kids Magazine and have challenged myself to bring a higher level of creativity and personality to the images I'm producing, while trying as always, to grow in my art and vision. The people I have had the pleasure of working with have been wonderful, indulging my efforts to create an energy to the shoot that has led to some fun results. One of my favorites so far is from the Voices feature in which four families take a first-person look at the joys and challenges of living as a multi-ethnic family in our society. For the images, we wanted something portrait-y, but with some room to play. The best way I found to make this work is to start off with activities. Get people moving, thinking, relaxing and goofing around w...

Chef Gio Osso Local First Arizona is an organization of local business to encourage investing your purchasing dollars with local companies and stores and less at big box and out of state companies. The idea is that by shifting even 10 percent of spending to your local businesses has a real impact on your neighbors and on our local economy. For my part, as a sustaining member of LFA, I am also offering a deal with the Golden Ticket. I recently began offering a Business Photography Package for smaller businesses to get to work with more of our wonderful local outfits. If this package addresses your needs, if you've been putting off using professional photography to improve the presentation of your brand, this just might grab ya. Here's the deal, take 30% (not 20!) off of my Small Business ...

Light and Granite

Julie, Josh and crew. We added a little light to the forklift driver's face by using a simple bar clamp, to attach a radio-triggered flash to the forklift's upright. Spent some time in Tucson a couple weeks ago doing a couple of business images at A&E Recycled Granite for Local First Arizona. Helene and I had a great time working with the owners, Josh and Julie who were patient with the process while being ready to move, clean, adjust or clamp down, anything in order to help make the photograph just a little better. These folks take all the leftover granite from other projects and turn it into of a variety of brick, tile and veneer products used all kinds of design projects. I've never met a ladder I didn't want to climb to change the perspective of my image, or a white wall that I wanted to bounce my Whi...
