Among the many discoveries, and every shoot has been a wonderful discovery, were the images that would fall in with the overall theme of portraits at a distance/life in a time of COVID-19.
A friend and colleague at Local First Arizona suggested a couple of businesses who are members of the organization who have figured out how to keep operating, earning some living to keep the doors open and as may of their employees working as was possible while being safe and responsible.
In the case of Urban Cookies in downtown Phoenix, The turned to contact-less pickup in their parking lot. They continue to bake their incredible cookies (not paid to say this, but yes they are amazing cookies!) as their faithful customers collect their cookie and coffee orders from a table set at the head of each parking space in their parking lot.
In the case of Fabric, they began manufacturing a new product, which made them the only manufacturer in Arizona creating protective gowns suitable for healthcare professionals across the state. In their crew professors and students from the fashion programs at ASU augmented their workforce to take on this enormous task.
Another newly minted company run by two brothers Marcos and Rui began creating face shields for medical use on their 3D printer using open-source programming.
Like with every other shoot, my goal is to be as uncomplicated in technique and use of gear as possible. A challenge to myself while also trying to make the shoots a little easier to manage as everyone navigates new challenges of working in proximity while maintaining space.
As a result 95% of everything I've shot in the project so far has been with existing light, creating not only a more artistic feel but a more documentary feel as well.
